Shelburne Red Wings

Red Wings Open Their Borders
August 24, 2011, Shelburne, ON

This season, the Shelburne Red Wings are opening their doors to players from around the world. Last season, Shelburne’s inaugural season featured an all-Russian roster, bringing in some of the most exciting players the GMHL has ever seen. The success of Shelburne's first season in the GMHL caught the attention of league management and players from all over the world.

In an effort to solidify the skill level of the league as a whole, all GMHL teams are now allowed to recruit Russian born players without restriction. This shift in recruiting policies has allowed the Red Wings more freedom in recruiting as well. This season, the Red Wings roster will be comprised of players from the United States, Canada and Europe while still holding a main core of Russian players.

The Red Wings organization and Greater Metro Hockey League are excited about these changes for the 2011/2012 season.

Thank you from the entire Red Wings organization:

Red Wings derailed by Moose
by Mike Maloney, Orangeville Banner

The 2010-11 hockey season came to an abrupt end for the Shelburne Red Wings this past weekend. Playing against the Toronto Canada Moose in the Greater Metro Hockey League (GMHL) South Divisional Qualifying Round, the Wings came up short by just one goal in back-to-back games Saturday (Feb. 26) and Sunday (Feb. 27). Opening the series in Toronto on Saturday, Shelburne got off to an early start with a goal late in the first period scored by Stanislav Dzakhov. Making the most of their power-play opportunities, the Moose added two before putting the game away with their third late in the final frame to take a 3-2 win. Back home at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex (CDRC) on Sunday facing elimination, the Red Wings were unable to hold off a hard charging Moose squad, who tied the game at 4-4 late in the third period. New GMHL record set

January 6, 2011

The GMHL's all-time leading scorer's record was set at 127 points in the 2009 - 2010 season, and everyone thought it would stay that way. On January 6, the Red Wings traveled to Bracebridge to play the South Muskoka Shield. Halfway through the 2nd period, the Wings found themselves down 5 goals to 1. Alex Nikulnikov and Stanislav Dzakhov lead the way in this close game, both adding to their point totals. Nikulnikov and Dzakhov simultaneously tied, broke and surpassed the current record and finished off the night with 129 points each. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to win the game as the Wings were edged out in a 7-6 overtime loss.
