Shelburne Media Release - June 1, 2010
Shelburne will soon be home to a Russian Jr. ‘A’ hockey team named the Shelburne Red Wings. In September 2010, a team of Russian-born hockey players will be converging on Shelburne, where they will live and play hockey. The team is part of the Greater Metro Hockey League and will be playing out of the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex beginning in the Fall of 2010.
The Greater Metro Hockey League provides a route for players to showcase their talent in order to move on to higher levels of hockey. The league’s intention is to deliver energetic and engaging hockey entertainment to the community of Shelburne while expanding the cultural horizons for both the Town and the Russian born players.
While in Shelburne, these young men will be productive members of the community through devoting time to volunteerism at various events, such as the Shelburne Canada Day festivities. Education is also an important component of the Red Wings’ program. Players will be enrolled in ESL courses and a full high school curriculum at the Shelburne High School.
"We are very excited to welcome Shelburne as a new member in the GMHL for the 2010/2011 season. The support from Town officials, rinks staff and the community has been overwhelming and we wish the Red Wings the best of luck next season."
Bob Russell - GMHL President
"We have high hopes for the success of the Red Wings organization this season. The community support combined with the high level players on the team, should be able to contribute some high energy hockey entertainment to Shelburne's already rich hockey history."
Rick Sage - GM, Shelburne Red Wings
The team, comprised of players aged 15-20, will require local families to billet team members for seven months. Being on the Shelburne Red Wings gives the players opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the community through the support of the billet program. Each player will pay $500 per month in exchange for becoming a part of the family environment. Billet families are the Red Wings first connection to Shelburne and interested families will be interviewed to ensure a good match.
The Red Wings organization is looking for active support from local hockey enthusiasts and businesses. If you are interested in sponsoring the Red Wings, billeting players or are interested in time keeping, videography, DJ or announcing, please contact Rick Sage at (519) 925-9989 or rick.sage@shelburneredwings.ca
